Eid means celebrations, happiness and cheerfulness.
There are two major events in Muslim’s calendar Eid-ul-fitr and Eid-ul-Adha. Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated at the end of Ramadan on 1st Shawwal while Eid-ul-Adha starts from 10 Zilhajj to 13 Zilhajj.
Eid-ul-Adha is also called as Greater Eid, Eid-e-qurban or Baqra Eid. On this day Muslims with financial strength sacrifice Halal animals such as cow, goat, camel or sheep for the sake of Allah.
The philosophy of Eid-ul-Adha is very simple, that to keep away all your wishes and presents yourself to Allah. We can find many examples of sacrifice in Islamic history and act of Hazrat Ibrahim Aleh Salam is the biggest example of it.
Eid-ul-Adha is the day when Prophet Hazrat Ibrahim Aleh Salam was ready to sacrifice His son to Allah. That was happened when Hazrat Ibrahim Aleh Salam saw a dream at night that Allah asked Him to sacrifice His son Hazrat Ismail Aleh Salam for Allah’s sake. Hazrat Ibrahim A.S then told this to His son Hazrat Ismail Aleh salam who was just about 13 years old. Hazrat Ismail A.S replied “Oh father, do whatever you have been commanded, if Allah wishes you will find me to be patient” (Surah Al saffat, verse 102).
Then He came to his wife Hazrat bibi Hajra and asked her to ready Hazrat Ismail A.S by giving bath and clean clothes. Hazrat Ibrahim A.S took a knife and a rope and went out to jungle along with Hazrat Ismail Aleh salam to fulfill Allah’s command. On the way, Shaitan met Him in a form of old man and advised Hazrat Ibarahim Aleh Salam to not sacrifice but Hazrat Ibrahim Aleh Salam had strong faith in Allah, He identified shaitan and threw stones on him.
shaitan also went to Hazrat Bibi Hajra and told her what Hazrat Ibrahim Aleh Salam is going to do with her son, but Hazrat Hajra was also a strong believer of Allah, she identified shaitan, and replied that she could sacrifice thousand Ismail for the sake of Allah and then threw stones on shaitan.
When shaitan failed to mislead Hazrat Ibrahim A.S and his wife bibi Hajra, he went to Hazrat Ismail Aleh Salam and told him what his father is going to do with him but Hazrat Ismail A.S was also a prophet and strong believer of Allah, he also threw stones on shaitan. In Mina, Hajji still uses to throw stones on those three shaitans to offer the sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim Aleh Salam.
(three shaitan in Mina where Hajjaj throw stones on them)
Hazrat Ibrahim Aleh salam then took His son on a mountain, tied His hands and legs, wrapped His eyes with a clothes so that He could not change His intend, then He waved His knife. After removing the cloth on the eyes, Ibrahim Aleh Salam saw a slaughtered ram (a male sheep) in front of Him instead of His son and Hazrat Ismail Aleh salam was smiling by His side. At same time, a voice from God heard “We called out to him, O Ibrahim You have indeed fulfill the vision, and thus indeed we reward the virtuous”. Almighty Allah liked Hazrat Ibrahim’s sacrifice and it become necessary for all Muslims of the world to show their willingness by sacrificing animals for the sake of Allah. So every year on 10th Zilhajj Muslims of whole world show their willingness and “taqwa” by offer sacrifice animal for the sake of God and this is called Eid-ul-Adha.
Almighty Allah does not require anything or any animal but He wants His men to show their piety (taqwa) and faith. In surrah Hajj He clearly says
“It is not their blood or flash that reaches Allah rather it is your piety that reaches Him”.
In this year 2014, Eid-ul-Adha will celebrates on 6th of October in Pakistan and 5th of October in UAE, Saudia, USA and other countries according to moon sighting.
After offering Eid prayer, people return home and slaughter animals for Allah’s sake. All the Muslims can slaughter animals until evening of 13th Zilhajj.
Meat of sacrificed animals is divided into three shares, for Relatives, for poor and one for home use. On this joyful occasion families and friends make plans to do bar –b- que.
By sacrifice animal for the sake of Allah, our faith on Allah become more strong and by sharing with poor people we learn that there should be always a share for those who needs our help.
May Allah make us more faithful and strong believer of Islam. Amen
